Amos 8:11 KJV
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.
The phrase “the days come” speaks of a season in time. It points to a period in which there will be a notable scarcity, not of physical food or water, but of the true Word of the Lord. This famine is spiritual in nature, and its effect is far-reaching.
In economics, scarcity occurs when demand exceeds supply. The same principle applies spiritually. When there is a growing hunger for the Word of God, but a diminishing supply of sound teaching, scarcity sets in. In this context, the stewards and suppliers of the Word are the children of God who are called into the teaching ministry. When those called are discouraged, distracted, or dissuaded from their divine assignment, the result is a shortage of truth and clarity for those who seek God sincerely.
Amos 8:12 further explains the consequence of this famine:
And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. This verse reveals a deep spiritual hunger. In their quest to be nourished, people will travel great distances and explore many places, yet still struggle to find the Word of the Lord in its purity. It reminds us that humanity is a threefold being, spirit, soul, and body. Each part must be fed. When the spirit is starved, the whole person suffers.
This is why Scripture declares:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.”
