Lessons from Joseph in the Bible
There are many valuable lessons from Joseph in the Bible. His story teaches us about character, patience, hard work, and a strong relationship with God. Even in difficult situations, Joseph remained faithful and upright.
One of the most important lessons we learn from Joseph is meekness.
The Meekness of Joseph
The Bible tells us in Genesis 37:4:
“And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.”
Joseph’s brothers hated him because their father loved him more than the others. Yet despite the hatred and hostility he received, Joseph still treated them with love.
But what exactly is meekness?
According to the dictionary, meekness means gentleness, humility, and patience in the face of provocation. It is the ability to remain calm and kind even when people treat you unfairly.
The Bible also teaches us to love our enemies. Joseph demonstrated this principle long before it was explicitly taught in the New Testament. His brothers despised him, but he did not respond with hatred.
Instead, his life shows us that we should love and pray for others even when they do not seem to like us. This includes our brothers, sisters, friends, or classmates.
Imagine yourself in Joseph’s shoes. All your brothers dislike you. When you try to play with them, they shout at you or even beat you for no reason. That was the reality Joseph faced.
His brothers even planned to kill him before he was eventually sold into slavery. Yet Joseph remained meek and patient.
The phrase “as meek as a lamb” perfectly describes the spirit Joseph displayed.
Different situations may arise in life, but one lesson from Joseph in the Bible is clear: choose meekness.
The opposite of meekness is pride, anger, and harshness. Joseph chose gentleness instead.
Joseph’s Hardworking Spirit
Another important lesson from the Joseph Bible story is his hardworking nature.
The Bible says in Genesis 37:2:
“Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren…”
At just seventeen years old, Joseph was already responsible for caring for his father’s flock. Only God knows how many sheep were under his care.
This shows that Joseph developed a strong work ethic early in life.
In today’s world, some social trends make people think that being hardworking is unnecessary or outdated. But the Bible shows us that diligence brings favor.
Being hardworking does not mean doing things the hardest way possible. It does not mean going to the forest to hunt for bush meat when you can buy meat in the market, or using a grinding stone when you have an electric blender.
Rather, hard work means putting in your best effort using the resources available to you at that moment.
Not everyone is born with a silver spoon. Joseph’s father had flocks, but not every family has the same resources. Whatever resources your parents or guardians have, you can still develop a hardworking spirit.
If the task is fetching water from the well, do it diligently. If it is washing dishes or helping at home, do it faithfully.
Hard work is not about the task itself. It is about the attitude and excellence you bring to the task.
Excellence Brings Recognition
Joseph’s diligence eventually brought him favor.
The Bible records in Genesis 39:4:
“And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.”
Potiphar recognized Joseph’s ability because Joseph worked with dedication and excellence.
It was not luck that elevated Joseph. It was his grit, discipline, and excellence.
Joseph did not simply complete his duties as a slave. He did them exceptionally well.
This teaches another important principle: it is not enough to do a task, you must do it well.
In mathematics, for example, it is not enough to arrive at the final answer. You must also follow the correct steps to solve the problem.
In the same way, excellence matters in everything we do.
Joseph’s Spiritual Relationship with God
Another powerful lesson from Joseph in the Bible is that Joseph loved God and maintained a spiritual life.
The Bible tells us that Joseph had dreams through which God revealed things to him.
A dream can be described as a phenomenon where the human spirit receives a message from the spiritual realm. Sometimes it reveals information about the past, present, or future.
God revealed Joseph’s future to him through dreams.
The Bible says:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
God speaking to Joseph showed that Joseph belonged to Him.
A true relationship with God is not only about speaking to God through prayers. It also involves God communicating with us.
Communication must go both ways.
